Choosing a lighting system begins with the home you want to live in. A small renovation and a whole-home architectural project can have very different control needs, even when both homeowners ask for “smart lights.” Start with the rooms, fixtures, and everyday actions before choosing the platform.
Describe the experience first
Write down three or four moments you want to improve. Perhaps arriving home means lighting the entry and kitchen. Dinner might call for softer ambient light with a little emphasis on the table. Goodnight might turn off common areas while leaving a path to the bedroom. This exercise creates a useful scope without requiring you to select every keypad or fixture.
Compare the complete design
RadioRA 3 is Lutron’s wireless residential lighting-control platform. HomeWorks offers broader options for highly customized projects, including centralized and distributed control approaches. The choice should account for fixture compatibility, keypad preferences, wiring opportunities, shading, and the eventual size of the system. A room count alone does not settle the question.
Consider what is already in the walls
In an existing Sarasota home, access can influence the design as much as the wish list. Ask your installer to review the current dimmers, wiring, and lighting loads. If walls are open for a major renovation, discuss whether a different control layout would reduce switch clutter or make future service easier. Existing equipment should be evaluated individually rather than assumed compatible.
Ask for a room-by-room explanation
A useful proposal should make the experience understandable: which lights are controlled together, where you will press a button, and what each scene does. Ask what is included in programming and the walkthrough. Bring your lighting schedule, floor plan, and any equipment information to the first conversation. Smart Space can help connect these decisions with the electrical work behind them.
